My first tip is that your domain name should be the same as your business name/blog name. The reason is quite obvious. My second tip is that you should target shorter domain names. You want a short domain so people can remember it easily and so that people won’t mistype. But please make sure that the domain name is meaningful. Don't just choose a short name just because it's short. If you can’t find a meaningful short domain name, you can go for longer ones. Just make sure that it’s not too long.

More tips later.

Continuation...

My third tip is regarding domain extension. For business websites, I personally choose .com over other extensions. I say that because people are more familiar with .com that other top level domains such as .net and .org. In my opinion, it is more professional. However, you can use .net and .org if you just want to put up a personal website. Most non-profit organizations use .org.

My fourth tip is that if your business has funds secure the .net and .org too. This is to insure that nobody takes it. Well, if you are really paranoid

.com is always considered the 'ending' of an URL, .com always give the impression.

A good domain name should have or reflect what your business. Not longer but easy to remember also counts. Try not to use too common word like computerxxx.com or xxxcomputer.com

Well thats true to a point, however a few sites like .contraband.com. , and dogpile.com have gone for quirky, not descriptive and it's worked just fine for them;) Genrally it is better to be descriptive, not always however.

Well, for me if you dare choose a domain name like Google or Squidoo be prepared to shell big bucks. Promotion is the key here. You have to familiarize people with your domain name. However, if you are just starting and don't have big budget you should not go for domains like this.

By the way, the tips that are provided are for beginners with small time business.

I think it's getting harder and harder today to get a good .com name. It seems that I am always picking a name that is already in use. Has anyone else had this same experience?

I know there have to be some good domain names still available. I guess I'm just not that good at hunting them down. I do know people who hunt them down, buy them and then resell them for a higher price. They're making decent money doing this but it's not for me, that's for sure LOL

RSS Feed RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the "recent changes" page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checking, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.
