I have heard that it is becoming popular to buy up domain names with a view to selling them on at a profit of course. The capital outlay must be enormous and I found it hard to believe that this could be made to work.
Has anyone heard of this before?

Yes, I have. And yes, a lucky few make a good living at it. They come up with killer new domains, sometimes just get lucky. Imagine you had bought toysrus.com before the company opened, they would buy it from you

I am actually doing this. Domains are not that expensive anymore. You can buy around $7 from Godaddy.com. I think Yahoo Domains has the cheapest right now. I think they sell domains at $1.99. I prefer Godaddy because it's easier to transfer ownership there. Although I don't earn thousands from this, I think it’s a profitable business. I earn hundreds. Maybe someday I'll get lucky.

I know some people who are doing this and they have been able to double their return on their investment. I find it pretty impressive because I'm having a really hard time finding any good names anymore.

Sounds interesting! For the sake of a few hours on the net getting a 50% return can't be that bad? Do you mean you make hundreds in a year, month or week workaholic?

Another way to make money on the Net ? This is getting better everyday. Everyday I find some inovative person doing something different and earning money from it. With all the new extensions coming up, maybe this will be a better way to make money !!

I think its more a gamble. You take a domain, pay yearly fees and if you are lucky you can make some money. But, if no one wants it, then your money is ruined. It is just like the activity of a bull in share market.
I don't think its a good money making idea. There are many good ones out there. Another point is that a company can get their domain with an extention of .net, .org, .ws, .cc, .tk and many more. |

Still...you can get a .com for $8 a year. may be worth a gamble...try thinking of a good one and checking its value at www.dnseek.com before you buy it.
